learning about Chinese Irish Food via Thai Express, Wikipedia, and Google Maps

Media: Risographs, found text, urls, sound piece.
This collection of images and texts came out of a commission for Mirror Lamp Press, a digital publication supported by the Arts Council of Ireland.
As the featured artist in Issue No. 11: Bottom of the Pot, I produced a series of risographs and line drawings inspired by my online encounters with a Chinese-Irish dish called “Spice bag”.
I’ve been doing research around hyphenated or Overseas Chinese Food within my practice and this dish really took hold of my attention. At the same time, I’ve been studying the topographic, architectural, and linguistic patterns (the things/language/environments we associate with Chinese food, that isn’t the food itself) of Chinese restaurants around the world.
For this commission, I archived images of Chinese restaurant storefronts, interiors, and menus in Ireland via Google Maps. Abstracting these photographs via risograph techniques, I highlight certain colour palettes, objects, text, and architectural forms of interest found in the original images.
Adjacent to this research, I’ve made a list of all Chinese restaurants that popped up when I used Google Maps to search “chinese restaurant ireland”. The list is only up-to-date as of April 8, 2025. I cut up this list and used it as line drawings scattered throughout the online publication.
Playing with the online interactivity of a digital medium, when the reader “clicks” certain images in the publication, they are teleported to the Google Reviews page of the associated restaurant.
Responding to MLP’s invitation to contribute to the audio edition of Bottom of the Pots, which was broadcasted live on Resonance 104.4 FM, September 22, 2025 at 8 pm, I created an experimental sound piece made up of audio from various online videos mentioning “Spice bags”.
